Object Name Copper alloy sculpture of an old man
Description This brass figure portrays an old man bent over leaning on a stick. This is not so much a sign of frailty as a symbol of respect for old age. It is a dignitary performing a ritual act. It is possible that this figure comes from a group of figures that depicted a sacrificial scene. Stylistically, it belongs to a younger style (ca. 1840-1900), which is characterized by increasingly abstract, expressionless, unindividualized-stylized faces. This is also supported by its poorer quality of craftsmanship with a rough surface. It occurs when the clay for the mold is not well sifted and the finished cast is not filed. Text: Dietmar Neitzke.
