Collector | Eduard Schmidt (1859-1899), German Consul in Lagos and main representative of the trading company Witt & Büsch in Hamburg, bought objects from the 'prize' (i.e. 'official' booty), which was also distributed among the officers of the colonial war campaign, and from the more unofficial 'loot' (seized by officers and other members of the war campaign) between February and August (maybe also until the end of 1897) |

Circumstances of acquisition | * until 18/02/1897: Royal Court of the Edo Kingdom, Benin City (Nigeria) * 1897: 'prize'/official booty or loot; British Admirality, British officers or civilans connected to the British colonial war campaign against the Edo kingdom in 1897 * 1897: purchased by Eduard Schmidt (1859-1899), the German Consul in Lagos; Schmidt bought about 80 looted objects on the spot and dislocated them to Germany in 1898 (first Hamburg, then Berlin) * 1898: purchased by Max Schoeller (1865-1943), factory owner and colonial activist, in Berlin (or Hamburg) * 1898: Schoeller donated the commemorative head to the Linden-Museum Stuttgart in exchange for the Ritterkreuz-medal 1st Class of the Friedrichs Order (by the King of Wuerttemberg) * 1971: translocated to Mainz through an exchange with the Linden-Museum Stuttgart, Germany (732 objects from Afghanistan/Pakistan exchanged for 637 objects mainly from Oceania and Africa from the Linden-Museum) |
